Battle of Zuxit

THE YEAR IS 2017

1 YEAR SINCE THE BATTLE OF ZUXIT

IN THE FACEBOOK JUSTICE SYSTEM
THE PEOPLE ARE REPRESENTED BY NOONE
THESE ARE THEIR STORIES

What have you done with your life lately / Are your parents proud?

I recently published my second novel, Mutilated Viking Strippers Take the Pentagon (available at tinyurl.com/buymvsttp) and yeah, they may not understand 99% of what I post but I know my parents are proud and support me.

What’s your or your pages message?

My page (Orange Ocelot) as well as the pages I help run (emodad666, The Buffest Movie Buffs, and several others) are just about making people laugh with original content, promoting other people and pages’ content, and general trying to make this bleak hellscape a little less so.

OO3Did zuxit work? (yes? no? why?)

I don’t think Zuxit worked in the sense that we showed Zuckerberg a thing or two, but it definitely brought a community together and built bridges where they didn’t formerly exist and in that sense we have accomplished something great.

What have you done with your life lately / Are your parents proud?

Well I quit smoking cigarettes cold turkey after 10 years which is cool. I started running meme pages full time as a job which is also cool and very fun. I’m basically making more money on instagram than I’ve made at any job I’ve ever worked, and I’m just doing what I enjoy doing. I have no clue if my parents are proud, I doubt it. I honestly don’t care what they think, they’ve always been pointing me in the wrong direction, and I only started having success after I started ignoring their advice.

What’s your or your pages message?

None of my pages have a message. It’s pretty much just purely a creative outlet, for entertainment and for money. I have personal beliefs and they definitely come across on my pages sometimes, but I just try to be widely relatable so I can reach a wide audience. I don’t think a lot of “weird Facebook” meme people appreciate that, but they don’t mind coming asking for shoutouts either, so it’s a trade-off.

DAB MOM 3Did zuxit work? (yes? no? why?)

That depends on what Zuxit was setting out to do. The Zuxit definitely raised awareness about what Mark Zuckerberg and other people at Facebook consider a fair upholding of community guidelines, and how their methods of reviewing reports are absolutely arbitrary. If you look at how they handle instagram now, it’s the same. They arbitrarily take things down, leave things up. There’s really no stopping them. We exist on their platform, so they have every right to kick us off or let us thrive. I just wish that the racist/homophobic/transphobic/sexist memes and pages could get taken down with the swiftness of pages that challenge the establishment. It’s a losing battle, there’s no denying that, but mass protests are a good move, and we should keep doing them.

What have you done with your life lately / Are your parents proud?

I have taken a break from my page for the time being. Right now I am focusing on activism irl. I am working for better public transit in my city. This is due to it encompassing many things that are important to me; it’s a woman’s issue, social economic issue, class issue, and so much more.

What’s your or your pages message?

My page’s message has always been equality. I hope it came across that way.

GBS1Did zuxit work? (yes? no? why?)

Zuxit didn’t work but I feel like we always knew it wouldn’t. The thing you have to accept in activism is that you’ll lose many more fights than you’ll ever win but continual fighting is what leads to any progress. I hope that more people are continuing the fight for less censoring of public comment or message. That fact that groups like BLM are continually having content removed is a huge problem. We need to keep the conversation open in our real life interactions.

Did zuxit work? (yes? no? why?)

yes it worked

worked is a vague word tho
one i detest

What have you done with your life lately / Are your parents proud?

nothing. i haven’t spoken to my parents in years. seems doubtful.

What’s your or your pages message?

there is no message and there is no hope.

Did zuxit work? (yes? no? why?)

no. same reason nothing works. the bastards already won.

What have you done with your life lately / Are your parents proud?

Not that memey unfortunately because I’m great with my parents and my recent life activities are pretty tame I’m studying at a university and work a front desk at a hotel. However the meme page I made lead to a nice Canadian lady that asked about why I still lived in Syria then offered to sponsor us out of there. A year later I’m in Canada and my parents are pretty proud about me getting them outta there and pursuing my education because I’m too lazy to not live a tame life and I guess I like Maths so it’s all good. Maybe some drugs can spice it up.

What’s your or your pages message?

I made my page back when I was feeling extremely down after a bad midterm back in Syria, I used it as an outlet for myself to feel better using sad memes (they weren’t as stale back then) and people messaged me all the time to converse and a lot of them thanked me for helping them feel better with relatable memes. The message would probably be to not use sad memes to feel worse, which is comparable to when you listen to sad music while you’re sad, but to use it as a way to let off steam through smiling/laughing and realizing there’s people out there that relate and go through similar shit that you go through.

DLS1Did zuxit work? (yes? no? why?)

I unironically believe zuxit worked but it’s anecdotal. Reports to a bunch of posts I had were actually considered false reports and Facebook tells me that they were not breaking community guidelines, which never happened in pre-zuxit.

What have you done with your life lately / Are your parents proud?

I’m currently in the process of incorporating an independent nonprofit for meme research, and preparing for a PhD in the philosophy of biology.

What’s your or your pages message?

My page’s message is to make meaningful memes and to raise memetic literacy.

tpm3Did zuxit work? (yes? no? why?)

No. Zuxit didn’t meet its stated goals of convincing Facebook to change its moderation policies and uphold the promises outlined in the Facebook Principles document. We knew from the beginning that Facebook’s inconsistencies weren’t accidental flaws but a necessary effect of its self-serving design. We wanted to attack that self-serving design in defence of the users. The attempt changed the way the meme community thinks about the way it memes, and it was an important initiative.

ZUCC’D DURING THE WEEK & A HALF IT TOOK TO PUT THIS TOGETHER

(+ contributor to fuck you to, millions of dead posers, slow heavy metal music playing, the buffest music buffs, an extremely bigoted triangle, millions of dead kulaks, antifash whiscash, vaguebook memes and call your father he misses you)

What have you done with your life lately / Are your parents proud?

Not much has changed in my life, just raising my kid and working the same job as I was a year ago. Since Zuxit I’ve been involved in starting quite a few fun pages and enjoyed having all these outlets I’ve never had before. I think my parents are proud, but they have no idea of my online antics.

What’s your or your pages message?

Well I contribute to nearly 20 pages at this point, but most are centered around marxism-leninism, music and juvenile humor.

Did zuxit work? (yes? no? why?)

I’m not sure if it accomplished the goals set out, but I would be hesitant to call it a failure. It succeeded in bring myself and many others together. Which then sparked so many new collaborations and pages. And the friendships continue today, the community was certainly there before zuxit, but since it feels like a much smaller world and I’ve embraced being a part of instead of doing one thing with a singular vision.

What have you done with your life lately / Are your parents proud?

Finished grad school, now working in a spice factory. Parents are proud of the grad school thing, maybe less so of my choice to work in a warehouse lol. Also started taking meds and they’re sort of working.

What’s your or your pages message?

My message is that Marx was right and also leave school as soon as possible. Follow your dreams but don’t feel bad about taking enormous breaks for your mental health. Retreat and regroup

Death3

Did zuxit work? (yes? no? why?)

Zuxit worked, in a way no one could have predicted. We all knew it wasn’t going to actually disrupt the system or anything. But it brought hundreds of content creators together in a coordinated effort. Bonds were made between artists which lasted after the strike, and in many cases to this day. Zuxit was a watershed moment for the weird facebook and leftbook communities, and should be remembered as such.

What have you done with your life lately / Are your parents proud?

Since Zuxit? Zuxit was my first time getting involved in the organisation side of political activism. Afterwards, I got a lot more involved with advocacy both url and irl. Organized demonstrations and raised money for Standing Rock and Planned Parenthood. I’ve also done some screen writing and just started submitting a film to festivals.
I don’t think they really grasp a lot of what I do and what we did but they’re proud of me. They hear good things.

What’s your or your pages message?

The world’s really messed up, we should all try to fix it but also lets laugh as much as possible until we die.

HoodPo3Did zuxit work? (yes? no? why?)

I mean I believe in a collective consciousness, so yeah I believe it did. It definitely could of been the catalyst for all those leaks that followed detailing FB’s community standards policies. There’s still a weird level of surrealism to the whole idea that a multi-billion dollar corporation was protecting white nationalists. And then finding out it was true! I remember hearing the reports on the news and feeling like Mulder at the end of one of those X Files episodes where it turns out he was right.

What have you done with your life lately / Are your parents proud?

I recently abandoned everything I’ve ever known to be some kinda gay bohemian. my parents are kinda proud but they also don’t know that’s what i’m doing up here.

What’s your or your pages message?

My message always was that everything is temporary so there’s no reason to worry or take any of it seriously but i’ve also come to realize

that oppression is super real and must be stopped so i’m trying to work that in as well.

Did zuxit work? (yes? no? why?)

Of course it worked, we got mark to say “Zucc”

Murse3

What’s your or your pages message?

With my work on all the pages I make content for i would say I generally promote a lot of radical leftist ideals promoting equality, empowering of marginalized people, and the destruction of an array of social constructs and legal, political, etc. systems.

Trace3Did zuxit work? (yes? no? why?)

It’s hard to say if it worked or not. I think it raised awareness and Facebook did supposedly change a lot of their policies regarding their reporting system (if i recall correctly)
but it’s hard to make an impact on a site so huge even with the collective mass following that zuxit participants had
and it’s even harder to get regular people to care about memes
at least, enough to like
take any action.

What have you done with your life lately / Are your parents proud?

I’ve really just been working a lot more. I’ve become more interested in online marketing/advertising in the past year so I’ve been teaching myself all about that. Yeah my parents are proud lol

What’s your or your pages message?

I’ve become very inactive in the meme community and don’t really make memes anymore. Idk just lost the motivation I guess.. I’m still active on my personal profile tho

jc3Did zuxit work? (yes? no? why?)

No.. and probably because people don’t really take meme pages seriously

HUMANS OF ZUCKERBERG’S FAKE INBOX

ZUCC’D DURING THE WEEK & A HALF IT TOOK TO PUT THIS TOGETHER

(+ the following all now zucc’d pages; creepy old dudes of mattyb, Mark Zuckerberg’s dead kid picture stash, mark zuckerberg – unofficial, etc)

What have you done with your life lately / Are your parents proud?

Well, im having a second kid and have made progress in my real life career, so I imagine theyre pretty proud – as far as Facebook, she couldn’t give a shit

What’s your or your pages message?

The genesis of all my pages is the idea that Facebook is fundamentally broken and exploitable. From bringing attention to the underworld of sexualizing children to parodying Zuckerbergs lack of interest in maintaining a transparent content reporting system.
